Pope Urban II

The statue of Pope Urban II watches over the Champagne vineyard in place of the Statue of Liberty. The huge 33m statue of Pope Urban II was built in 1887 and although it may not be open to visitors, you can see the entire valley and spot 22 of the surrounding villages from its viewfinder table.

Here’s what you need to know about Pope Urban II, otherwise known as Odo of Châtillon: he initiated the First Crusade to Jerusalem in 1095 and imposed two days a week for the Peace and Truce of God in armed combat. For further information, visit Paysages de la Champagne Tourist Information.
